Month in office, mayor aims to paint open spaces green

On a day when he completed one month in office, Mayor Sunil Prabhu asked the civic administration to provide him with a list of the open spaces across the city as well as open plots adjoining drains.

Driven by the aim to create more and more open spaces for the city, Prabhu has decided to appoint a task force for the project, which he plans to undertake in the next two-and-a-half years. “The aim is well within reach with better management,” said Prabhu here on Monday.

While noting that the city has many a open space that can be converted into green zones, Prabhu said, “But sadly, they are just left unattended, which later on become dumpyards.”

“Architect PK Das has agreed to work for such open spaces, that can provide walking tracks, cycling tracks or simply eye-appealing zones with a lot of greenery and flowers to attract butterflies and birds, said Prabhu, while wondering why the side of a sewer drain or storm-water drain could not turn beautiful.

Further, Prabhu wants to increase the current Mayor’s fund of nearly Rs2 crore, interest from which is used towards medical aid for the poor. “After all, if the poor and needy are designated to approach the Mayor for help, I would want to create more allocation for this fund,” said Prabhu, who has collected Rs2,90,369 in his first month in office.

In fact, his staff have been instructed by Prabhu to make it clear to all that the new Mayor will rather accept whatever little donation from his concerned hosts than the traditional felicitation of a shawl and a coconut.
