HOW TO DEAL WITH TOXIC PEOPLE

‘Toxic’ people are those who attempt to manipulate you by piling their problems on you, and making you feel guilty if you aren’t ‘there’ for them. Here are some tips on how to distance yourself from such ‘toxicity’!

Avoid them like the plague

Toxic people want your help, and they will try to make you feel guilty if you aren’t able to come through for them. It is usually difficult to get rid of toxic people. The best way to deal with someone trying to make you guilty is to avoid being around them. No matter what you do, you cannot change them, or their habit of trying to drain people’s happiness by instilling guilt.

Anticipate their moves

It is a hard task to call quits from a relationship with a toxic person. They can make you feel guilty for avoiding them and stick to you like leeches. Hence, it is advisable to draw up a list of traits that suggest that a person might be toxic. Distance yourself. It is better not to create a relationship with toxic people than having to break free.

Set firm boundaries

The aim of toxic people is to use you for achieving their goals. They transfer their problems to you and expect you to solve them. At this point it is necessary to specify the extent you are ready to go to help them and where you want to draw lines. Setting boundaries can include not wasting your time listening to their problems.

Get over your guilt

Toxic people make you feel guilty if you do not help them. Do not allow toxic people to use your conscience and your guilt against you. Remember, only when you feel guilty for not helping them, can they use your guilt to make you do what they want. If you have your boundaries in place, you shall realise that your guilt is illogical
