Dressed in a white kurta and pyjama, Harakhchand Sawla can be seen taking a walk around the premises of Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Parel everyday from afternoon till late evening, talking intently to those who are generally overlooked by passers-by, the cancer patients that camp outside TMH.

Sawla has been tending to the patients and their relatives, teeming on roads leading to the hospital. Around 12.30pm for lunch and 6.30pm for dinner, patients queue up outside his tiny office in a nearby chawl with plates and glasses, and are served hot meals — rice, chappatis and vegetables.

"For those who have undergone rigorous chemotherapy sessions or have throat cancer and can't digest salty food, we serve turmeric-infused milk," says Sawla.

Thirty years ago, he left his thriving business and began caring for cancer patients by adopting 25 of them, looking after their nutritional needs. Sawla now has a dedicated army of up to 150 volunteers who assist him. Sawla's trust, Jeevan Jyot, also caters to the need for meals of 700-odd patients or their relatives at state-run hospitals — JJ, St George, Cama and TMH. The trust incurs a daily cost of Rs12,000 in feeding these patients.

"In the vicinity of TMH alone, the number of patients that come to us for meals has risen to 400," he says.

But that hasn't deterred this Mulund resident. From reuniting family members to helping out by providing free medicines or giving an appropriate funeral to the deceased, who have no one to fall back on, Sawla's trust spends up to Rs8 lakh every month towards social work.

"A few of them are so dedicated that once a patient completes his/her treatment, s/he escorts the unattended patients back to their remote villages across India and reunite them with their families," he says.

Fond of children, he says it pains him to see little ones affected by the dreaded disease. He recently took around 400 children for a day's outing. "We have regular activities for children to keep them occupied and distance them from the pain that cancer can inflict. We convince people to collect and submit old medicines, toys, clothes and books for the kids. I appeal to more people to come forward and help us in our endeavour of making the lives of cancer patients a tad better," he adds.

 At 12.30 pm every day, a long queue waits outside a tiny shop in one of the by-lanes behind Parel-based Tata Memorial Hospital for their turn to get free food. Each one lives on the footpath lining the cancer hospital and is a relative of some or the other patient admitted there. And their stay for months has emptied their pockets.

The tiny shop run by a trust, called ‘Jeevan Jyot’, serves lunch and dinner to around 600 people daily, along with free medicines for cancer treatment. The shop, manned by a dozen temporary volunteers, aims to help economically backward cancer patients and their families who have come from various parts of the country to seek treatment.

Among various unique methods Jeevan Jyot adopts, one is to invite local residents to donate old newspapers. “We get a lot of raddi and old clothes, which we sell to buy medicines. We also have a network of patients. Some people have extra medicines that they don’t require. We take the unexpired ones from them and pass it on to the hospital for poor patients,” said Diren Gada, who has been attached with Jeevan Jyot for four years now.
Harakhchand Savla (56), a hotelier in Nagpada, first launched this initiative 30 years ago by serving food to five people when he saw the families living on streets with just small suitcases and a thin mattresses to support them. “For 12 years, he spent from his own pockets. Word got around and people started helping,” Gada says.

Today, along with volunteers, the group circulates old toys to cancer patients and passes them on to other kids after it is returned. Recently, a picnic to theme park Essel World was organized for over 400 cancer-stricken children with funds donated by local Parel residents.

The shop has become a popular spot for extending help to cancer patients. Last week, blankets were distributed to families sleeping on pavements. “Sometimes, a donor would sponsor lunch and we could also get sweets to serve the people. Few patients in the hospital have also requested to be served food and a lunch box goes to them free of cost,” a volunteer said.

Devising new means for getting donations, the shop publishes names of donors (giving clothes or medicines or cash) in a local Jain tabloid. “People started reading the names and got inspired. That has helped us get more clothes and raddi in donation,” Gada says as a woman with a bag full of old newspapers enters the shop.

त्याच एक चांगल हाँटेल भाड्याने देउन त्याच पैशातुन त्याने त्या हाँस्पिटलसमोर कोंडाजी चाळीच्या रस्त्यावर एक यज्ञ सुरु केला जो पूढे 27वर्षे चालुच राहिला,
तेथिल जनतेला सुद्दा हा ऊपक्रम आवडला आणि त्यांनिही हाथभार लावला

ते एवढेही करुन थांबले नाही त्यांनी रुग्नांना मोफत औषध पुरवायलाही सुरवात केली.त्यासाठी त्यांनी औषधांची बँकच उघडली त्यासाठी तीन फार्मासिस्ट व तीन डाँक्टर अन वर्कची टिमच त्यांनी स्थापन केली.

'एमसीसी'ने प्रायोगित तत्वावर कार्डप्रणाली सुरु करण्याचा निर्णय घेतला असून क्रिकेट खेळत असताना दुसऱ्या खेळांडूसोबत दुर्व्यवहार करणाऱ्या खेळांडूना रेड कार्ड दाखवून मैदानाबाहेर काढले जावू शकते किंवा १० षटकापर्यंत पेनल्टी बॉक्समध्ये पाठवण्याची शिक्षा देण्याचा निर्णय घेतला आहे. एमसीसीने सध्या क्लब, विद्यालय आणि शाळा स्तरांवरील क्रिकेटमध्ये हा प्रयोग राबविण्याचा निर्णय घेतला आहे. इंग्लंडमध्ये गेल्या वर्षी प्रतिस्पर्धी खेळाडूंसोबत दुर्व्यवहार केल्याने कमीत कमी पाचवेळा सामना रद्द करावा होता. एमसीसीने जागतिक स्तरावरील पंचासोबत (अंपायर) यासंदर्भातील आचारसंहिता बनवली आहे. प्रस्तावामध्ये चौथी श्रेणीमध्ये दुर्व्यवहारामध्ये अंतर्गत पंचाला धमकी देणे, खेळाडू, अधिकारी किंवा दर्शकावर हल्ला करणे अथवा वादग्रस्त टिप्पणी करणे यांचा समावेश करण्यात आला आहे.

'जर फलंदाज श्रेणीप्रमाणे दोषी आढळला तर त्याला सामन्यामधून निवृत्त केले जाईल. तिसऱ्या श्रेणीत दोषी आढळला तर त्याला १० षटकांपर्यंत पेनल्टी बॉक्समध्ये पाठवले जाईल. यापेक्षा कमी दोषी आढळल्यास संबंधित संघावर पाच धावांची पेनल्टी लावण्यात येईल असा श्रेणीमध्ये समावेश करण्यात आला आहे. गेल्या काही काळापासून क्रिकेट मैदानावरची भांडणं वाढली आहेत. 'स्लेजिंग'चं रुपांतर आता शिवीगाळ, धक्काबुक्की, मारामारीत होत चाललंय. त्यात इंग्लंडचे खेळाडू पुढे आहे. त्यांची वर्तणूक सुधारण्यासाठी हे पाऊल उचलण्यात आल्याचं एमसीसीच्या अधिकाऱ्यांनी सांगितलं.

अजित पवार, तटकरे यांची चौकशी होणार?

एकात्मिक राज्य जल आराखडा अस्तित्त्वात नसतानाही मंजूर केलेल्या १८९ प्रकल्पांच्या चौकशीसाठी राज्य सरकारने मुंबई हायकोर्टाच्या औरंगाबाद खंडपीठाच्या आदेशानुसार समिती स्थापन केली असून, ही समिती तीन महिन्यांत अहवाल सादर करेल. या प्रकरणात तत्कालीन जलसंपदामंत्री अजित पवार आणि तसेच सुनील तटकरे अडचणीत येण्याची शक्यता आहे.

एकात्मिक राज्य जल आराखड्याविना सन २००७ ते २०१३ दरम्यान राज्यात ५६०० कोटींच्या १८९ सिंचन प्रकल्पांना मंजुरी देण्यात आली. त्यात गंभीर अनियमितता झाल्याचे निरीक्षण नोंदवून या प्रकल्पांच्या चौकशीचे आदेश मुंबई हायकोर्टाच्या औरंगाबाद खंडपीठाने दिले होते. त्यानुसार राज्य सरकारने पुण्याच्या जलविद्युत प्रकल्पाचे चीफ इंजिनीअर रा. वा. पानसे यांच्या अध्यक्षतेखाली चार ज्येष्ठ इंजिनीअर्सची चौकशी समिती नेमली आहे. यामुळे तत्कालीन ​सिंचन मंत्री अजित पवार व सुनील तटकरे यांच्या कारभाराची चौकशी होऊ शकते.



या १८९पैकी ६६ प्रकल्पांचे काम सुरू झालेले नाही. या प्रकल्पांच्या निविदानिश्चितीत अनियमितता झाली का, याबाबत प्राथमिक चौकशी करून अहवाल सादर करण्याचे निर्देश १० फेब्रुवारीच्या शासननिर्णयात दिले आहेत. हे प्रकल्प आर्थिक, जलवैज्ञानिक व पर्यावरणाचे प्रचलित निकष पूर्ण करतात किंवा कसे, याबाबतचे अभिप्राय शासनास सादर करण्याचे आदेश समितीला देण्यात आले आहेत.

गुजरातमध्ये चकमकीत मारल्या गेलेल्या मुंब्रा येथील इशरत जहाँ हिचा खरा चेहरा डेव्हिड हेडलीच्या साक्षीतून समोर आल्यानंतर तिला निर्दोष ठरवणारे राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेसचे आमदार जितेंद्र आव्हाड यांनी बचावात्मक पवित्रा घेतला आहे. मला या प्रकरणाचा नीट अभ्यास करावा लागेल, असं ते म्हणाले.

अहमदाबाद येथे पोलीस चकमकीत इशरत जहाँ मारली गेली. या प्रकरणावरून मोठं राजकारण झालं. इशरतला निर्दोष ठरवत अनेकांनी तिच्या कुटुंबीयांना पाठिंबा दर्शवला. राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेसचे आमदार जितेंद्र आव्हाड यांनी त्यावेळी इशरतच्या कुटुंबीयांना आर्थिक मदतही केली. मात्र, आज डेव्हिड हेडलीनं इशरत ही लष्कर-ए-तोयबाची हस्तक होती, इतकंच नव्हे तर ती सुसाइड बॉम्बर होती, असा धक्कादायक खुलासा केला. यानंतर या प्रकरणात इशरत निर्दोष असल्याचे ठामपणे सांगणारे आव्हाड बॅकफूटवर गेले आहेत.

इशरत जहाँ प्रकरणात बचावात्मक पवित्रा घेत त्यांनी 'एबीपी माझा'कडे आपली भूमिका मांडली. हेडली नेमका काय म्हणाला, हे अद्याप माहिती नसून, ते जाणून घ्यावे लागेल. त्यानंतर इशरत प्रकरणाचा अभ्यास करावा लागेल, असं त्यांनी सांगितलं.

इशरत जहाँ चकमकीत मारली गेली, तेव्हा हेडली हा अंमली पदार्थांची तस्करी करत होता. तोपर्यंत त्याचा 'लष्कर'शी कोणताही संबंध नव्हता. त्यामुळं हेडलीनं इशरतबाबत दिलेली माहिती किती खरी आहे, हे आधी पाहावं लागेल. हेडलीचा वादग्रस्त इतिहास पाहिला तर, त्याच्यावर कितपत विश्वास ठेवायचा हे ठरवावं लागेल, असंही आव्हाड म्हणाले.
